Twinings Lobster Shanty in Fenwick Island on Rt 54

by Bill on July 18, 2010

The Lobster Shanty Restaurant recently opened on Route 54 in West Fenwick Island, Delaware. It is billed as a Seafood Bar, Market and Grill. It fits the bill.

Twinings Lobster Shanty Fenwick Island Rt 54The new (July, 2010) Twining’s Lobster Shanty is conveniently located on Rt 54 – just west of the hustle and bustle of Ocean City’s and Fenwick Island’s “Coastal” Highway. Their water’s edge location is certainly convenient to locals and vacationers alike and the Twinings opened their doors to an instant success (which means, unless you arrive early, the parking lot may be full and you may have to park on the highway).

Twinings Lobster Shanty SignThe Twinings, who have run a fairly upscale restaurant, Nantucket’s for 20 years on Rt 1 in Fenwick Island proper, took over this marsh-side eatery. They seem to have included their secret for success in Twining’s Lobster Shanty: pleasing decor, attentive staff and an interesting menu with quality ingredients.

Reservations? Nope. This writer stopped by in the afternoon before we dined there – to take some pictures and to make reservations. (Funny, but when I walked in the front door after taking some pictures I was immediately greeted by a hostess. Then some woman came rushing over asking if I was from “the paper.” I wasn’t – she walked away. Sorry, but these words and pictures will be in front of people long after that news article is long forgotten. The hostess was friendly, polite and informed me they don’t take reservations.

We went back at dinner time – got the last available spot in the parking lot and ended up with about a 20 minute wait. Not bad for a new and popular place in July at the beach.

The dining area was decorated just as a “lobster shanty” should be and every table had a great view of the marsh. The place was even child-friendly (but ran out of high chairs and kid-cups shortly after my granddaughter was seated). There were bars anchoring each end of the restaurant and they even had an outdoor dining area on a deck with brightly colored table umbrellas.

The food was good and service was reasonable (actually good, considering they were slammed and had only been open a couple of days). Pictures below show some of what was on our table. The crab cake will be described in another post.

Lobster Shanty Shrimp Kabob

The Lobster Shanty’s Shrimp Kabob not only looked appetizing – it was delicious. That was a good choice, ordered by the writer’s sister-in-law, even though we shared a Shrimp appetizer – heh.

Lobster Shanty Bacon-wrapped Shrimp AppetizerThe appetizer that we shared was delicious, albeit a bit pricey. There were four large shrimp wrapped in bacon and drizzled with a tasty sauce. But they cost $2.50 each, yup – ten bucks for four shrimp and four slices of bacon. But it was good, no question about that.

Lobster Shanty Iced Tea

Cute glass; and good, refreshing iced tea. Of course we were all a bit too full to try dessert. But, we’ll be back – for sure – another time to try to make it to the dessert round. Don’t forget, we’ll also have that report on a “basic” crab cake in another post.
