What’s a good way to judge the quality of a new seafood restaurant, or Seafood Bar, Market & Grill, as the case may be? Try a CRAB CAKE, of course.

So, I did. I ordered the “Nanny’s Crab Cake,” which was described as: “The finest lump of crab with our secret blend of herbs & spices, Broiled Golden.” The price listed for this crabcake, which was found under the Burgers & Sandwiches (Served with House Slaw, Chips and a Dill Spear) section of the menu was “12″ ($12.00, Twelve Dollars).
Well the crab meat was lump and the Twining’s Lobster Shanty “secret blend of herbs & spices” was actually very good. As you can see in the photo above, this crab cake was broiled golden – done just right. The nearly perfect crab cake was overpowered a bit by the heavy roll. The House Slaw was also tasty, but unfortunately that’s all there was – a taste, a very small taste. Some people say an optimist might call it a cup half full, but even that optimist can see it was more than half empty. And the chips-in-a-bag? Yeah OK – tasted fine, but rather a tacky presentation.
If you live in the area you already know about this place. If you are vacationing in Fenwick Island you probably passed it on the way in. If you are vacationing in Ocean City head north on Coastal Highway and make a LEFT on Route 54 (you are now in Delaware – remember, no sales tax on your dinner check) and go inland about a mile and a half. After you cross the looong bridge over the marsh, Twining’s Lobster Shanty will be on the left. Enjoy. We did and we’ve gone back a couple of times.
